Why outsource a SOC?

Outsourcing your Security Operations Centre to a respected MDR company is the best way to maintain watertight cybersecurity and gain access to world-class security experts while keeping overall costs manageable.

As organisations grow, the temptation to DIY a security centre makes sense – they’ve done most things themselves up to that point, so why not keep their security in-house?

This is certainly an option, but most managers don’t realise the operational complexity of running an effective SOC for a large organisation. More complexity requires more expertise, which requires more cost. And criminals don’t usually sleep when you do, so round-the-clock monitoring (even on a small scale) very quickly adds significantly to expected expenditure.

For constant monitoring, you need roughly three shifts a day – which means you need at least 5 full-time members of staff to cover the 21 shifts per week, and then at least another three to account for sickness and leave. In wages alone, this adds at least a million pounds to yearly outgoings – let alone the cost of licensing software, renting secure office space, or other necessary overheads.

For large organisations, this million-pound-plus figure can often be approved by boards who see the value in serious cybersecurity – it’s a question of numbers. The harder task, however, is finding and retaining the individuals with enough expertise to keep your organisation safe.

It’s easy to spend money, it’s not so easy to find the right people.

Do we have a dedicated SOC for each client?

No, because we’re able to optimise specialist knowledge across our workforce, we don’t need to dedicate a SOC to each client. Due to the size of our client base, we’re able to optimise schedules and knowledge to reduce downtime and work smarter with state-of-the-art tools that help us filter what’s worth our attention from what isn’t.

Because we’re able to tap into, as needed, the expertise of industry-leading professionals with different specialisations, we can make sure that all of our clients are safe – rather than dedicating particular members only to particular clients.

The bottom-line benefit is: reduced thumb-twiddling for us means reduced cost for you.

Do you still need a Security Manager?

Most organisations retain a small managerial staff to oversee long-term strategy and align our monitoring with their priorities – essentially allowing them to be experts in their organisation and allowing us to be experts in the particular cybersecurity fields required.

For many, our MDR services become the Robin to their Batman – always there for backup in a scrap, some good advice, or to save the day when all seems lost. We develop close relationships with our clients and effectively become an extension of their team – an extension they don’t need to worry about micromanaging.
